Freeroll Strategy: Difference Between Freerolls and MTT's |
 |

|
Freeroll Versus MTT
Poker is a game of a hundred and one different variations, game types, strategy decisions etc. etc. Basically, anything that can be changed or tweaked or debated or argued over in poker does get changed and debated and all of the above and the differences between freeroll and MTT are no different.
Freeroll tournaments are basically those which have no entry fee and allow players to sit down at a table and join in the action for free. Most, if not every online poker site, will offer freeroll games although many of them state that players must reach a certain level of loyalty points before entering the freeroll rooms.
Multi Table Tournaments or MTT are the opposite of freeroll is as much as they normally require an entry free and play is occurring across multiple poker tables all at once. Strategy for freeroll and MTT can actually differ quite a lot so thinking through which strategy suits the type of poker you`re playing at any given time should be a crucial part of your overall approach to playing - and hopefully winning - poker.
Whilst some players dismiss freerolls, thinking they are somehow superior to this type of play, or perhaps thinking that freerolls are only for players who aren`t successful enough to be able to pay the entry fee, the truth is that many of the top players like freerolls because they are a fantastic way to build up your winnings at absolutely zero risk.
That said, the standard of play in freerolls is normally much lower than in MTT so in order to get the best from freeroll play you should adjust your play accordingly. Freerolls have weaker players so you should set out with the objective to play more aggressively than you would in a typical MTT.
Freeroll tournaments often start out easy with it seeming amazingly simple to store up a huge stash of chips during the beginning and middle parts of the tournament. Blind stealing, value shoving and pure bluffs are three potential poker strategies worth considering in the freeroll environment.
If you can manage to collect a decent amount of chips during the middle section of the tournament you will have the chance to play pure poker whilst still managing to command the action and bluff blinds. As the rest of the table are weaker, it is probably always bet a flop with 2 or fewer of your fellow players.
Also, unlike MTT or general cash play, it is also generally considered to be good practice to have no squeeze play for the sake of a bluff. The chance are that the rest of the players won`t be seasoned enough in the art of poker to be able to read a great hand, so faking can actually do you harm rather than working to your advantage at this level.
Choosing when to bluff is one of the most important ingredients for success and another way in which freeroll differs from MTT. Bluffing in the initial stages of a pot and attempting to steal the blinds is probably the best policy when you play poker games.
